Haleiwa Scramble-Welch
December 7, 1941. Following an engagement over the Marine base at Ewa Field, Lts. Taylor and Welch land at nearby Wheeler to refuel and rearm. As they take off from different ends of the airstrip, Welch is airborne first. Taylor’s ship is strafed by a low flying Zero. Lt. Welch overtakes the Japanese fighter, and as he passes over his wingman, catches his prey with a quick burst from his six machine guns and sends it into the ground.
