God Saved Me Today

June 15, 1943. The mission on this day was the Milo Airdrome in Trapani, Sicily. Flights of P-38 Lockheed Lightnings from the North African Air Force's 14th Fighter Group, 48th Squadron were circling the target; while providing escort cover for the B-26 Martin Marauders from the 320th Bombardment Group. Suddenly Capt. Anderson’s P-38 was hit by flak from ground-fire or fire from an Italian Me-109. As his plane spiraled out of control, he bailed out into the Mediterranean Sea. Wounded, he was captured by the Italians as a prisoner of war, and was taken to their Marine Hospital in Trapani. On July 24, 1943 he was repatriated by U.S. Army Paratroopers.
